SELF/FAMILY-TAUGHT ARTIST: SARAH H.
I splashed into life in Orlando, Florida, the middle child of 6 siblings. Traveling north for our father's work, the Honaker Family eventually anchored itself in the mountains of West Virginia. Some of my fondest memories are of those early days watching my father, mother, and neighbors topple towering pine trees to build our family's log home. Wild turkeys could be heard calling not far off, and fat black squirrels the size of cats scolded the new family's building project. It was unimaginably exciting for a curious child with a vivid imagination. I immersed myself in Nature from the moment my bare feet hit the moss-carpeted ground and quickly developed a deep appreciation for its fragility. I explored the limits of my world through pencil & ink, and prose.
Today, I continue to explore my world through art, with an expanded repertoire including acrylic and watercolor paints. I also enjoy making jewelry, and still write, though not as often as I would like. I consider myself blessed to be surrounded by supportive family and friends. Their open and honest assessments give me the needed insight to explore my own imagination and further explore my artistic endeavors.
The most influential presences in my artistic development have been my late father, a gifted professional painter, and my Aunt Pegs, also a very talented professional artist. I regard myself as their perpetual student.
In 2003, I met Butch, and Life washed me down to the shores of the tiny Bahamian island where Butch spent most of his time. Alongside Butch and I is our beloved Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix, Billie-Girl. In this magical place I now pursue my art full time. I hope that my paintings and other work will inspire an appreciation of Nature in you, my viewers, as well as encourage you to explore your own creativity.
